Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for Better Health Company’s Accredited Health Coach Training Program

This course is designed to support your application for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as part of the Better Health Company’s Health Coach Training Program. Our nationally accredited training equips you with the skills and knowledge to excel in health coaching. It is an industry-endorsed program aligned with the 2023 Health Coaches Australia and New Zealand Association (HCANZA) health coaching standards.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

RPL acknowledges the skills and knowledge you’ve gained through formal education, work experience, and informal learning. By completing the RPL process, you may receive formal credit for your existing competencies, enabling you to achieve accreditation faster and more efficiently.

Why apply for RPL?

Applying for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows you to leverage your existing skills and experience to fast-track your accreditation and advance your career in health coaching.

  • By completing the Accredited Health Coaching Course through the RPL process, you will be eligible to apply for professional membership as an Accredited Health Coach with the Health Coaches Australia and New Zealand Association (HCANZA). This certification allows you to practice health coaching professionally and demonstrate your expertise.
  • Receive formal credit for your prior learning, work experience and reduce the time required to complete the full training program.
  • Achieve nationally recognised accreditation to open doors to new professional opportunities in health coaching.

Eligibility criteria

To apply for RPL, you must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in health science, health promotion, or a related field.
  • Have completed a minimum of 500 hours of health coaching or facilitation with Better Health Company or a previous employer (subject to approval).
  • Have been employed or contracted by Better Health Company for at least 6 months.
  • Hold a permanent full-time or part-time position with Better Health Company.

The RPL process

If you are interested in applying for the RPL process to obtain your Accredited Health Coaching Certificate, please follow these steps to complete your RPL application. Once you’re ready, launch the course and upload your documents for review.

Step 1: Self-assessment
Review the performance requirements for this course and complete a self-assessment to determine if you are ready to proceed with your RPL application.

Step 2: Assessment evidence overview
Understand the types of evidence you will need to provide as part of the RPL process.

Step 3: Collect your evidence
Gather the necessary documentation to build your portfolio of evidence, demonstrating your skills and knowledge.

Step 4: Submit your application
Complete the final assessment record and submit all required evidence to finalize your RPL application

Required assessment evidence

To demonstrate your competency, you must submit the following evidence.  All documents required for submission can be found within the lessons of this course.

RPL Supervisor Sign-Off FormA third-party report completed by your supervisor or manager, documenting your real-world performance.
Supplementary Quiz CompletionComplete a quiz on the Better Health Hub with a minimum score of 90% (1 attempt allowed).
Additional Evidence (if required) For employees or contractors without structured QA, evidence may include meetings, role plays, or interviews with an assessor.

What is competency?

Competency means demonstrating the ability to perform tasks to workplace standards consistently, over time, and in relevant workplace contexts. To be deemed competent, you must:

  • Apply relevant skills, knowledge, and attitudes effectively.
  • Perform tasks consistently to industry standards in real or simulated workplace environments.

What is your assessor looking for?

Your assessor will evaluate whether your evidence demonstrates:

  • Effective communication skills in health coaching.
  • Application of behavior change strategies.
  • Consistent performance of tasks to industry standards.

Next steps after submission

Once you’ve submitted your application:

  1. Your assessor will review your evidence and communicate the outcome.
  2. You’ll receive feedback on your assessment, with the opportunity to revise if needed.
  3. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the Accredited Health Coaching Certificate.
